My good friend and pint-sized neighbor is moving on to bigger things.
Tonight he's leaving to join his student-mother in America.

I haven't felt this kind of sadness for a long while... It's healthy, I suppose.
My sunshine filled location often presents me with chances to experience the lighter side of life - moments of loss aren't on my agenda too often.

It's been a pleasure to know and love young Nic Nic and I look forward to seeing his family again some day. Realistically, I probably will see him again someday - his roots are near Avi's roots and those roots occasionally bump into each other in Trinidad, typically over the holidays.

I'll have to find someone new to share my Skittles with now...

Farewell, Nicholai!!

I've just wrapped up a month long assignment archiving the daily activities of an academic summer camp here in Grenada... St. George's University holds the summer activities for youngsters interested in perusing careers as physicians and veterinarians.

Between the two sessions (one for high schoolers, one for college students) I photographed rainforest adventures, cadaver labs, hands-on clinical skill building, dolphin watching, dinner parties, med/vet dissections, spice market shopping, rectal palpations on cattle, beach barbecues, sailing/snorkeling trips... The list goes on and on.

It was a whirlwind of smiles and shutter releases.
My cameras and I are ready for a long day of quiet rest before I catch up on phone calls and podcasts.

[It's been soo long since my last post that I almost feel that I should reintroduce myself!]

The beginning of my June was chock full of football camp sessions...
I'll try and pick out a few of my favorites before they end up buried in the archives.

This one was shot at St. Andrew's Secondary School near the town of Grenville (NE Coast) where roughly thirty-five kids spent two hours after school running basic drills coached by professional UK Premiere League footballers.

This is one of my favorites because it was an early evening camp...
So often I'm given daytime blue and green color palates to shoot - this location was dry and brown with golden sun peeking through the trees; not to mention the cool breeze - a great reprieve from the heat of direct sun!

In my book, June 1st has always been the first day of summer...

As a child, it meant just a few more torturous days in school before Summer Vacation.
You see, our schools were built with winter heating in mind - keeping the cold outside and the heat inside. The first few hot, muggy days of June were slow to pass as teachers brought in loud fans and frequent ice cream treats. Sitting in a superheated brick classroom was the last thing anyone wanted to do - teachers and students alike. Instead, lesson plans would embrace any excuse to get us outside and running in the breeze.

June 1st was unofficial start of summer vacation...
No more homework, no more quizzes, and no code of conduct was taken too seriously.
You could feel the idea in the air - 'Only a few more days until we're free'.

::sigh::

What does this day mean to me as an adult?
I'm not quite sure, but it's still my favorite day of the year.
Even in a land of perpetual summer I still feel a glimmer of that youthful excitement.

"Pierrots, prominent figures in Carriacou Carnival, originated from disguised entertainers during French colonialism. Their roles have evolved over the generations to roving bands competing between their villages/plantations in literature reciting, mostly Shakespeare.

Today Shakespeare Mas competitors pair off face to face; one recites while the other listens. Missed lines are rewarded with a stroke from a rod, but colorful, heavily padded and masked head dresses offer protection and the flowing paper lined capes add theatrical loud noises when the stick hits its mark.

This event is unique to Carriacou and is a must to see on Tuesday morning. Troops start from Mt Royal and make their way down through the villages performing, stopping for rum in between rounds, until the event culminates in Hillsborough for the final showdown." - via.

This was easily my most favorite part of Carriacou's Carnival... :-)
