I'm traveling off-island for a while - headed to the African Continent for a work assignment with St. George's University. The journey includes a quick flight to Trinidad tonight, then up to New York for a direct flight to South Africa, then a short hop to Botswana.

Total miles to be flown: 21,646.

A medical simulation mannequin rests (SimMan from Laerdal) between workshops in the Simulation Center at St. George's University.

On this particular weekend the University was hosting an outreach workshop, inviting physicians from Grenada's General Hospital to brush up on their Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) skills. The University's inventory of SimMan technology allows for evidence-based case scenarios programmed, controlled, and monitored via wireless connection to play out complex emergencies.

SimMan has a long list of tricks up his sleeve... He speaks, has palpable pulses, reactive pupils, and can blink. He can cough, convulse, and cry liquid tears. You can start an IV, watch his chest rise and fall, hear breath sounds and heart rhythms. He can bleed, be defibrillated, catheterized, and more.

But somehow, as impressive as they are, I still can't shake that strange feeling of being all alone alone and surrounded a dozen blinking, breathing mannequins.

I don't run in expatriate circles too much, but they're easily some of my favorite Grenada transplants. She's Canadian, he's a proper Englishman, and I first met Leslie & Andrew a few weeks before photographing their beach-side wedding back in July 2009.

If I behave myself and buy a nice baby gift maybe we'll be lucky enough to have some newborn photos to share soon. :-)

People ask it all the time – “When is the best time to visit Grenada?”

Besides the obvious answer of ANYTIME there are two weekends I adore most – Carnival (early August) and the sailing festival’s Workboat Regatta (early February).

There were plenty of cool breezes, hot sands, and ice cold Carib flowing all weekend.
