Once the largest sugarcane factory in the world, the Usine Ste Madeleine Sugar Factory stands idle, reflected in a neighboring pond.
During its peak years of operation the factory produced up to 250 tons of sugar per day, with multiple smokestacks reaching into the sky. The surrounding sugar estate is a unique mix of cane fields, abandoned corporate housing, and a still-manicured golf course originally built for the defunct sugar companies that controlled operations over the years.
